Title of the Study :
“Effect of Kolb 'S Experiential Learning on Achievement in Content Based Methodology Teaching Social Science and Teaching Skills among Pre-Service Teachers”.
INTRODUCTION
Experiential learning is an approach that can redefine education by engaging students in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. Beyond all conventional methods used in schools, lies the mantra for consolidating ideas and shaping the dexterity of a child in the form of experiential learning techniques. The learning process might start from any stage of the learning cycle. Kolb emphasizes two very important aspects: First the use of concrete experience to test ideas, and second the use of feedback to change practices and theories. As these two aspects are crucial, it is essential to involve both processes in the planning of classes. These assessments ensure identification of weaknesses and strengths and provide opportunity to modify the work processes. Experiential learning in pre-service teacher education is expected to produce good result in the preparation of prospective teachers whose experiences are build around mentoring as a delivery system in the actual school setting. It might ensure the opportunity to realize how students studied during the term and to modify their performances.
Statement of the Problem: A study on the Effect of Kolb’s Experiential Learning on Achievement in Content Based Methodology of Teaching Social Science and Teaching Skills among Pre-service Teachers of Mangalore Taluk .
Objectives of the Study
-To study the effect of Kolb's Experiential Learning on Achievement in Content Based Methodology of Teaching Social Science among Pre-service Teachers
-To study the effect of Kolb's Experiential Learning on Teaching Skills among Pre-service Teachers
-To study the Effectiveness of Kolb's Experiential Learning Strategy on Teaching Skills among Pre-service Teachers with High Teaching Aptitude.
-To study the Effectiveness of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Strategy on Teaching Skills among Pre-service Teachers with Average Teaching Aptitude.
Hypotheses of the Study
Ho. 1: There is no significant difference in Achievement in Content Based Methodology of Teaching Social Science among Pre-service Teachers taught through Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model and Traditional Method.
Ho 2: There is no significance difference in Teaching Skills of among Pre-service Teachers taught through Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model and Traditional Method.
Ho 3: There is no significant difference in Teaching Skills of Pre-service teachers with High teaching aptitude taught through Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model and Traditional Method.
Ho.4.There is no significant difference Teaching Skills of Pre-service Teachers with Average Teaching Aptitude taught through Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model and Traditional Method.
Methodology
It was an experimental study with Post-test only equivalent group design. All the Pre-service Teachers Mangalore Taluk were the population of the study. Randomly selected 60 Pre-service Teachers were the samples of the study. Experimental group was taught through Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model for a period of 2 weeks and control group was taught through traditional method. Achievement in Social Science was measured at the end of treatment by administering a tool ‘Achievement in Content Based Methodology of Teaching Social Science’ prepared by the investigator based on the content taught during treatment. Teaching Skills were measured using Student Teaching Profile developed by St. Ann’s College of Education (Autonomous). The aggregate scores obtained by the student teachers in the first block of practice-in- teaching was considered as the Teaching Skills of Student Teachers. Data was analyzed using inferential statistic ‘t’ and the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level significance.
